Introducing our Summer 2026 Ambassadors - Madison, Trail Running

Written by Madison (@runwithmadison)

This idea of challenge by choice has stayed with me since I first started running in 2022. After stepping away from collegiate soccer, I found myself searching for something that could replace not just the structure of sport, but the feeling of being pushed—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Running came into my life at a time when I needed that challenge most, giving me space to rebuild, rediscover who I was, and learn how to show up for myself in a completely different way.

Over the past six years, I’ve immersed myself in the trail and ultra running community, drawn to the simplicity and honesty of long days in the mountains. I’ve competed in distances ranging from 10 km trail races to 100 km ultra events. To date, I’ve completed 11 marathons (including several self-supported efforts) and 18 ultras between 50–100 km, many of which were as much about personal exploration as they were about performance. For me, running has become an outlet where I feel a strong sense of community and pride in who I am, while also feeling connected to others who are pushing their bodies in ways they may never have before.

Why Valhalla Pure?

Partnering with Valhalla Pure Outfitters aligns closely with how I approach the outdoors through a shared commitment to intentionality, community and responsible use of gear. I value quality over quantity and Valhalla reflects that in the brands they carry and their focus on gear built to last. My personal philosophy is to extend the lifespan of my gear by repairing, maintaining and relying on it over years of use rather than constantly replacing it. That mindset aligns directly with Valhalla’s approach to thoughtful consumption and sustainability within the outdoor space.

Beyond gear, Valhalla fosters a strong connection to the outdoor community. As someone who spends significant time in the mountains and works as a teacher, I care deeply about encouraging others to engage with the outdoors in a meaningful and respectful way. Valhalla’s emphasis on education, stewardship and community connection mirrors how I try to show up both on the trail and in my everyday life.

Ultimately, this partnership feels natural because it’s not just about equipment, it’s about shared values. It’s about respecting the places we explore, supporting a community that prioritizes sustainability and approaching the outdoors with intention rather than consumption.

My Approach

I train 5–6 days per week, typically running 80–100 km, with a mix of structured workouts, long runs and easy aerobic sessions. A large portion of my training takes place in the mountains, where I’m not only building physical endurance but also developing technical skills, confidence on varied terrain and the mental resilience needed for long efforts. I regularly incorporate hiking and climbing into my training to better reflect the demands of mountain racing and long days out.

Beyond fitness, I place a strong emphasis on risk management and planning. Before heading out, I consider route choice, terrain, weather, and timing, ensuring I’m prepared with the appropriate gear and nutrition. I aim to make thoughtful decisions that allow me to move efficiently while minimizing unnecessary risk.

I’ve also learned not to let ego dictate my training. If I’m not feeling it, I recognize that it’s okay to step back. Recovery is a key pillar of my approach and I prioritize sleep, fuelling and intentional downtime so I can absorb training and stay healthy over the long term. I’ve learned that consistency comes not just from pushing hard but from knowing when to rest and reset.

Overall, my preparation is about more than just logging miles; it’s about building a sustainable system that supports performance, safety, and a deep respect for the environments I move through.

My Approach to Gear

I take stewardship seriously in how I move through the outdoors. I always pack out everything I bring in and I make a point to pick up any garbage I come across on the trail. I see it as a shared responsibility to leave these spaces better than I found them and not just for myself, but for the broader community.

I also approach gear with intention. I’m not driven by consumerism in the outdoors. If I invest in a piece of gear, I use it to its full lifespan. I believe in maintaining and repairing equipment whenever possible rather than replacing it prematurely. This not only reduces waste but also reflects a deeper respect for the resources that go into creating the gear we rely on.

For me, stewardship isn’t just about the environment it’s about mindset. It’s choosing to be thoughtful, accountable and sustainable in every aspect of how I show up. I aim to reflect and promote these values both in the outdoors and through my presence on social media.

The Mission

For the upcoming season, I plan to compete in the BMO Vancouver Marathon, Multi Grouse Grind Challenge, Fat Dog 40 Mile, and the Chicago Marathon, while continuing to prioritize long mountain efforts in the 40–50 km range.
