Chasing Fall Colors: How the Smartwool Classic Merino & Smartloft Hybrid System Handled My Autumn Mountain Hike

Chasing Fall Colors: How the Smartwool Classic Merino & Smartloft Hybrid System Handled My Autumn Mountain Hike

Written by: Anastasia (@anastasia.ventures)

There is a short, magical window every autumn when the air turns crisp, the leaves explode into brilliant shades of gold, orange, and crimson, and the mountain trails beckon. Fall is easily my favuorite season to hike, but it’s also the trickiest to pack for.

On any given autumn day, you will start shivering as soon as you step out of your car, sweat as soon as you start hiking especially under the midday sun, and get hit with biting, icy winds the second you stop above the treeline.

Finding gear that adapts to those drastic temperature swings without forcing you to stop every twenty minutes to swap layers is the holy grail. For my latest fall foliage trek, I relied on a three-piece system from Smartwool: the Women’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew, the Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Bottom, and the Smartloft Hybrid Jacket.

Here’s how this setup performed amidst the autumn leaves, how each piece works, and why it’s earned a permanent spot in my fall pack.

1. Setting Off: The Chilly Trailhead Start

If you see me on a morning hike squirming like a worm waiting to start. It's because I am cold. This is from YEARS of wearing my warmest jacket(S) just to have them overflowing from my backpack 5 minutes up the trail. My first fall hike ever I wore an undershirt, a long sleeve, a down vest, a sweater, a down puffer, and a raincoat. Not only was that overkill, but I ended up being the coldest I’ve ever been on a hike before.

Starting a hike when the morning air is freezing makes it tempting to throw on everything you have in your closet. But as soon as your heart rate spikes on the first incline, you risk overheating and soaking your clothes in sweat which is a dangerously chilly combo when the temperature drops later.

This is where the Women’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew and Bottoms shine.

Fabric & Construction: Crafted from 100% Merino wool at a 250 g/m² fabric weight, these pieces represent Smartwool’s classic mid-to-heavyweight thermal baseline.

Flatlock Seams & Panel Placement: The crew features flatlock seam construction designed specifically to minimize chafing. Additionally, the shoulder panels remove top seams entirely, so your heavy backpack straps don't rub directly against a seam on your shoulders.

Fit & Comfort: Both the top and the bottom are super soft and I like to wear mine a tad on the looser side to feel most comfortable. The bottoms feature a wide elastic waistband that sits comfortably without digging or rolling down under hiking trousers or shell pants. Both look great as is, so if you end up stripping to your baselayers you will still look trail-ready!

On-Trail Performance

As we pushed uphill through arches of golden leaves, my body temperature rose quickly. The magic of 100% Merino wool is its dynamic thermoregulation: it pulls moisture vapor away from your skin before it condenses into liquid sweat. Even as I worked up a sweat on the steeper sections, the fabric kept me dry and warm rather than clammy.

Normally when I hike I find myself stripping down to my tank top because I hate the feeling of being in super sweaty clothes and I don’t want my clothes to be wet at the summit. But in this baselayer set-up despite sweating I didn’t feel overly hot and it felt like the clothes weren’t holding my sweat like my regular longsleeve shirts would.

2. Reaching the Summit: Navigating Autumn Winds

There is no better feeling than reaching the summit. You are sweaty, your feet are starting to hurt but you are about to feel why it was all worth it. Dropping your bag and taking the view in has got to be top 10 feelings in the world!

Usually summits come without tree cover and the autumn wind feels like you just walked into the freezer. While a pure baselayer keeps you warm in calm conditions, exposed ridges require wind protection and core insulation.

Enter The Smartwool Smartloft Hybrid Jacket

Targeted Insulation:The jacket utilizes 50% recycled wool insulation strategically placed to hold onto warmth even if damp from light rain, snow, or body vapor. The merino wool lined interior also makes the jacket nice and cozy for chilly mornings and summits.

Zoned Breathability: The side panels and back feature a stretchy, breathable knit fleece. This stops heat from building up under your pack while giving you full range of motion.

Weather Resistance: The non-PFC DWR (Durable Water Repellent) front panel, helps protect against light autumn drizzles, dew, or sudden summit flurries.

On-Trail Performance

The Hybrid Jacket is perfect for the shoulder-season dilemma. It is warm and cozy for the mornings and fairs the shift from cold to sweat very well. For less strenuous hikes, I didn't have to take it off and put it back on every time the terrain or wind shifted; it worked with my changing body temperature very well! For more strenuous hikes it is very packable and for the amount of warmth it provides it didn’t take up much space. I also found it very cozy and comfortable to put on at the summit. Sometimes the heavy down jackets feel too warm to put on at the summit because you are still sweating despite being cold. This jacket deals with that problem perfectly since it is very breathable. So it will be replacing my down jacket for this fall season!

3. Post-Hike Comfort & The Verdict

After miles of crunching through leaf-covered trails and climbing under cool skies, we made it back down to the trailhead just as the afternoon light started to fade.

I feel like it's unspoken but after a hike there must always be a post-hike treat. Whether that be a hot chocolate on the way home, ice cream, a brewery stop or a full on meal.

One of the unexpected perks of Merino wool is its natural anti-odor properties. Even after a long day of hiking, the baselayers were not gross. Normally I feel like I'm a stinky, happy, mess after a long hike but for the first time I actually felt comfortable stopping somewhere. I wasn’t still soaked in sweat and I didn’t feel like the whole room could smell me!

Final Thoughts

Fall hiking demands versatility from your gear, and this Smartwool layering system delivered! By pairing 100% Merino thermal baselayers with a hybrid insulation piece, I stayed comfortable from freezing dawn starts to breezy mid-day summits!

If you’re planning your own autumn foliage hike this season, invest in your layers, it makes all the difference between rushing back down or staying out to enjoy every last golden leaf.

Happy hiking!
